I’m Not Wearing Makeup for You. Get Over Yourself.

I really only started to experiment with makeup when I was in high school. As a freshman I started off with the basics: some blush, and a smile line of eyeliner over my eyelid. I didn’t feel the need to spend endless amount of time applying products to my face and even if I had my mom would have never let me. However,as years went by, my mom became a little more lenient and I started seeing more girls wearing makeup.  So, out of sheer curiosity, I began to watch makeup tutorials online and would ask my friends about what they used and what they did. After some time I had properly learned how to wear and apply different types of products and now, as an adult, I have a full makeup routine that I use almost everyday. I am no makeup guru (not even close), but my makeup routine is something I feel comfortable and confident with.

When people think about makeup they usually assume people are wearing it just to impress someone or to get somebody’s attention, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I don’t put on makeup to impress people. I wear makeup for me, no one else. I’m not going to lie and say I don’t like getting compliments on my makeup and how I look because we all like being complimented, but at the end of the day, I am putting on makeup because it makes me feel good. I like the way I look with it on, that’s it. And I know plenty of other people who feel the exact same way.

What’s funny is that I’ve had plenty of people tell me that I don’t need makeup. They’ll say that I don’t need all of that eyeliner or that I don’t need concealer. The key word here is, NEED. But what if I am wearing makeup because I WANT to? Society today is telling females that they have to look like the beautiful models and actresses on the movie screens and magazines. That we have to be skinny and that we have to wear tons of makeup and while this should not be something young girls should be listening to, it is also teaching society to judge the girls who wear makeup. As a society we are applauding and praising girls who don’t wear makeup because they are going against what all of the magazines are saying, and while this is all good and dandy, other girls are being judged and put down because they wear makeup. So, are the girls who don’t wear makeup smarter and more superior than girls who want to wear makeup? Instead of putting one above the other we should just let girls do what they feel confident with. If you want to wear a lot of makeup, go for it and own it. If makeup isn’t your thing, good for you too!

One last thing. I’ve been hearing jokes lately that girls who wear makeup are liars because they are tricking guys into believing that is how they actually look. That girls are pulling a fast one on men by wearing a ton of makeup. All I have to say to that is if a guy actually thinks that a girl was born with glittery eyelids and dark, extended lashes, he is a moron.

Here’s my advice: Wear all the makeup you want, but for yourself; no one else. Do what makes you feel good. Screw everyone else.
