While summer isn’t technically upon us yet, the weather we have been having in Peterborough lately has got me really excited for late nights by the fire and sun kissed skin. So in preparation for a wonderful summer ahead, I took some time (thanks to my lifestyle business) to explore my surroundings. What I found are a few fun things to do this summer that won’t break the bank.
For those of you who are reading from all across the globe, while most of the things I am going to mention are located in Peterborough and the Kawarthas, I am sure that some of these things can be adapted to your surroundings! But of course if you ever make it to my neck of the woods you’ll have a few things you can check out now.
So here is my top 5 list of fun things to do this summer on a budget:
1. Hit a Bucket of Balls
Cost: $7.00 to $10.00
Head down to a local/public golf course and ask for a bucket of balls to hit at the driving range. I personally don’t have my own set of clubs but the course that my friend and I went to, Liftlock Golf Club just lent me a driver for an hour. It’s an awesome way to utilize some of your muscles you may not usually use and brush up on your golf swing. The cost also cannot be beat. Such a cheap activity to do on your own or with a friend!
2. Explore Burleigh Falls
I am so lucky to be about a 30 minute drive away from these amazing falls. They are a wonderful sight and so fun to explore. Bring your bathing suit, towel and some snacks! You’ll want to stay for the day to play in the water and walk along the rocks. I have also gone swimming in the falls before. However, I would highly recommend for those who would like to do the same, to wear a life jacket. There are other areas to swim around the falls where the current isn’t as strong but just be aware of your surroundings! There is also a restaurant above the falls where you could grab some lunch and also a little shop to get some ice cream to sweeten up your day.
3. Let’s Go to the Beach
In the Kawarthas we have some pretty great spots to hangout by the water for the day and Sandy Lake Beach in Buckhorn is no exception. Despite it’s name, Sandy Lake Beach actually is predominantly a grassy area. It’s pretty easy to just throw down a blanket or your towels and avoid the sand everywhere problem, that happens at most beaches. There is lots of parking and the water is always such a wonderful blue colour.
4. Roller Blade/Bike/Walk
In Peterborough we have the Rotary Greenway Trail which is for the most part, paved. It’s great for walkers, runners, bikers, and bladers. I personally love rollerblading so that’s usually my preferred choice of getting around these trails. The views are scenic and you can follow the Trent Severn Waterway all the way through to Lakefield, Ontario.
5. Grab An Ice Cream Cone
Cost: $3.00 to $5.00
Something that I love to do is try out different ice cream shops all over the Kawarthas. In Peterborough and the Kawarthas we are truly #blessed to have Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream. So it’s not really that I am trying new brands of ice cream but more so just figuring out which ice cream parlour is the cutest. But Kawartha Dairy really is the best. It is a 100% Canadian-owned company and its main headquarters are located in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. There are so many delicious flavours that even your dog will salivate over them. The photo below was taken at Stuff’d in Lakefield, Ontario and I would highly recommend checking this place out. Not only do they have ice cream but they also have the cutest bakery with lots of yummy treats for sale.
I hope everyone is as excited for summertime fun as I am. Let me know what you like to do during the summer in the comments below!
