In the last few decades, the accelerating technological advances the world has witnessed in all the different commercial industries, has facilitated the movement from one location and resulted in the enablement of the instant connection and superfast communication across the globe.

This has also become easier with the evolution of aviation industry, which now has a value of billions of dollars; right now, according to the most recent studies made, around 4 billion people travel all over the world via airplanes.

One of the major indicators which reflect this rapid growth in flight and aviation, in addition to the number of passengers and flights, is the large international airports and its capacity for both aircraft and passengers. Here, we demonstrate a list of the largest 5 airports in the world in an ascending order:

1- Washington Dulles International Airport - United States of America:

The United States of America contributes four out of five entries on our list; the smallest of which is situated inside Washington DC. Washington Dulles International Airport spans around 4850 hectares of land (52 square kilometers) and it accommodated a bit more than 24 million passengers in 2018 with flights to more than 100 destinations around the world.

In addition to that, the number of daily flights the airport hosts ranges between 1,000 and 1,200 flights.

2- Orlando International Airport:

Located in Orlando, Florida, Orlando International Airport is the Sunshine State’s biggest and most important airport; in 2018, it accommodated almost 48 million passengers.

The airport serves the visitors and citizens of Orlando City primarily as it is considered one of the most renowned tourist destinations in Florida and the entire United States. Every day, 850 flights originate from Orlando International Airport towards more than 130 local and international destinations.

3- Dallas Fort Worth Airport:

Considered the largest hub for American Airlines inside the United States, Dallas Fort Worth Airport serves both cities of Fort Worth and Dallas in the state of Texas. The airport’s flights arrive at almost 250 destinations around the globe, and it spans around 6963 hectares of land.

In the year 2018, the number of passengers traveling through the airport exceeded 69 million passengers, while it hosted 700,000 flights within the same year.

4- Denver International Airport:

As the biggest airport in all of the United States and the second largest airport in the world, Denver International Airport has been picked for six consecutive years (from 2005 to 2010) as the best airport in North America. The airport’s flights arrive at 187 destinations around the world, and nearly 65 million passengers have flown through 800,000 flights in 2018.

5- King Fahad International Airport - the largest airport in the world:

With an area that sprawls over 78,000 hectares of land, King Fahad Airport is yet to be taken off the top of the world’s largest airports’ list. The airport comprises a six-story building for passengers built over 3.5 million square meters.

In addition to that, the airport also includes the Royal Terminal, an exclusive terminal for the members of the Saudi ruling family, as well as a 250-key Hilton hotel. The airport is also home to OxfordSaudia academy which provides flight education services and a mosque that can accommodate up to 2,000 people.

In the latest study made, the number of passengers using King Fahd Airport annually were calculated to be almost 10 million passengers.

These were the 5 largest airports in the world so far, but with the growth which the aviation industry continues to witness, it would not be abnormal to see shifts within this list or even new entries in the near future.
