Look before you leap. Shop around for the best deals. Tell the truth.
These old tried and true sayings and others like them have not only become old but tried and true because, well, because they are. They have been tried multiple times by multiple people and they’ve worked every time which proves they’re true. Because they’ve tried so many times and because they’ve been found to be true, they’ve withstood the test of time, thus becoming old.
Churches, of course, put a premium on the truth. It’s baked into them with the Ninth Commandment, “Thou shalt not bear false witness.” The New Testament reiterates that in a different form when Jesus gave us the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you,” the idea being if you don’t want people to lie to you, don’t lie to them.
And so on.
Churches put this kind of stuff on their signs all the time. That’s what church signs are for. When you drive around town looking at their signs you can very quickly tell what a particular church will be like by what they put on their sign or what kind of sign they have. A low-key, nondescript sign signals a low-key church that probably doesn’t have a lot of high-energy sermons and foot-stomping worship music. Instead, it might signal the presence of a church that hews closely to the Gospel. It’s called church shopping
Shopping Around
Shopping is as old as civilization itself. In the days when cities had protective walls around them to fend off attackers, the marketplace used to be in the gates of the city. This allowed outsiders to come into the city to market their wares but without letting them go all the way into the heart of the city in case they had ulterior motives.
Sheepherders would try to outdo each other shouting about how good their selection of wool was or how tasty the lamb chops would be. All the other ranchers, farmers, and craftsmen would be doing the same thing. People would come to the market and wander from one stall to the next until they found the best deal.
Three thousand years ago the Bible noted how people act in ‘Proverbs 20:14, “‘It is good for nothing,’ cries the buyer; but when he has gone his way, then he boasts.” This shows how long wheeling and dealing has been around. It shows how long comparison shopping has been around too.
Start Shopping Now
If you haven’t started shopping for clothes for summer, get a move on, because summer has already started and the deals won’t last forever. Some people claim the best prices for summer clothes happen toward the end of summer when the fall fashions start hitting the racks, and while that is technically true, the best items won’t always be available anymore. That great outfit you’ve had your eye on all summer might be gone by the time everything goes on the clearance rack.
If you’re a big shopper then you know that comparison shopping online can bring you some of the best deals in the world. It’s not the same as taking an armload of clothes to the dressing room to try them on, but the prices online are usually better since the sellers don’t have brick-and-mortar expenses to worry about. Furthermore, if you buy a certain minimum amount, they often throw in free shipping.
Price Comparisons
Most people will automatically think of Amazon when you talk about shopping online, but a lot of manufacturers have their own online storefronts where they offer good deals. Many times, those deals will be better than what you can find on Amazon because you’re not paying extra for Amazon to take their cut.
It’s getting easier for companies to do their own shipping and online marketing. They want the revenue and customers that Amazon has been taking and they won’t be subtle about it. Dog eat dog is another one of those old tried and true sayings that come to mind when companies go to war with each other over customers and sales.
That leaves you, the customer, in the driver’s seat.
Don’t Settle For Second Best
When you see a good price on something, copy the URL for that website and save it to a document along with the price you saw. Then search for that item on another site and another and another. Eventually, you’ll find a better price than you ever thought you could.
