Paris as an Expat: How Life is Lived Differently

Paris as an Expat: How Life is Lived Differently

Nov 28, 2023, 11:38:14 AM Life and Styles

There's something very special about living in Paris and Parisians know a thing or two about living life. They have special joie de vivre philosophy that simply means the "joy of living". Where New York may be the city that never sleeps, the New York Minute may not be all it's cracked up to be. If you're thinking of moving to Paris, you'll soon discover that Parisians don't really like to live life in the fast lane the way Americans do. On the contrary, Parisians may live, work and do all the things that almost everyone in the world also needs to do, but they also know how to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life in a more deliberate and profound way.

Let's explore the way Parisians live life differently from their counterparts in the US.

Parisians Love Their Food

Food is a major part of the Parisian way of life. Sure, most people in the world love their food and Americans are no different. However, Parisians are more focused on quality, rather than quantity. You'll also never, or very rarely, see a Parisian running to the office with a hot dog or bagel in their hands. Nope! Parisians love to take their time when it comes to eating and are more likely to be enjoying fine food in a restaurant, rather than a fast-food place. Even meals at home are special events where food is usually made from fresh ingredients and the family sits at the same table to enjoy the meal.

They Love to Socialize

Parisians love to socialize and this also coincides with their love of food. Restaurants, cafes and bars are usually packed with people enjoying great meals, fine wine and fabulous coffee. More importantly, all of these things are generously seasoned with great conversation. Parisians like to keep up with current affairs. They talk about books, movies, families and just about anything. They love to have heated discussions but they rarely take offense no matter how passionate or emotionally charged to debate may get. However, don't expect political correctness because Parisians like to speak their minds.

Home Decor Is Simple but Stylish

Walk into any home in Paris and you'll instantly know if they are Parisians or Expats. Americans tend to decorate with whatever is trending and this often includes some kitschy pieces that add little or no value to the aesthetics. Parisians, on the other hand, prefer to keep their decor simple with vintage pieces and only add modern elements if they have meaning. Parisians are also more likely to decorate with sentimental items that they collected during travels or received as gifts. If you want to rent in Paris as an expat, a good platform is the best place to start looking and you'll most likely find one that is already decorated in the simple Parisian style.

The French Know How to Dress

Move to Paris and you'll quickly see the difference in attire on the very first day you walk around the city. Parisians are super stylish. It is, after all, the fashion capital of the world. However, if you're thinking of seeing Parisians walking around in Haute Couture, straight from the catwalk, think again. A true Parisian prefers chic décontracté which is basically casual chic. They like to mix jeans with long coats or tailored pants or a simple summer dress with sneakers. Everything is neat and clean. Don't expect to see a lot of Parisians walking around in hoodies and track pants as these are strictly for inside the home.

Moving to Paris may very well be the best thing you do. Learn from the French and learn to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life. Everything from eating and drinking to appreciating the arts and spending time with family and friends is done with purpose. Move to Paris and just like Parisian, indulge in a little joie de vivre.
