“They forced me to sleep with as many as 50 customers a day. I had to give [the pimp] all my money. If I did not [earn a set amount] they punished me by removing my clothes and beating me with a stick until I fainted, electrocuting me, cutting me.” Kolab - a sex trafficking survivor from Cambodia www.equalitynow.org
VAGINA, ever since I could remember, I was told, well more like reprimanded to keep you tightly bolted in chaste. Appalling and heinous as it may seem I was reprimanded to preserving your pristine, pearly, stainless virgin veil for holy matrimony. Yes Vagina, you were that forbidden fruit, I was taught to dress up, and keep tightly protected in this trench between my legs. I remember the day the flowered patterned cotton undies wrapping your innocence were soaked, as the red sea suddenly parted, breathing life to this dormant volcano submerged within. I was petrified, embarrassed and ashamed. Clueless, and baffled I cleansed your fragile hairy coated lips with such innocence and dressed you up warmly. Having discovered my tainted cloth I was harshly scolded by the woman whose vagina I knew all too well, having touched, kissed, and embraced it, as I seeped through its mucous coated labia to life. Yes my Punani, I’ve grown to comprehend that all this nagging and iron handed approach was for your protection. For you to be sheltered from this slithery, cunning, predators parading around in sheep’s clothing. We live in a cruel harsh world one where I constantly have to take a peek in that basement I keep you hidden.
I hardly take time to appreciate your being, yet I’m reminded of your presence monthly when your river flows and the red sea gushes with every uterine contraction. But recently images of Italian models Giulia Salemi and Dayane Mello hitting the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival emerged. These ladies were vocally thrashed for their tackiness, lack of morality and tasteless fashion faux pas.
Their look termed the ‘Vagina cleavage’ is a jaw dropping, eye popping fashion craze that sees dresses with our coochies air drying in public. A dear friend of mine pointed out how she preferred her Punani firmly nipped, tucked and pruned for her significant other and failed to grasp the logic behind this modern take on fashion. Understandable seeing that we grew up with the notion that our womanhood should be out of sight and out of mind. That it was sanctified, nourished and pruned for ‘man’, forgetting that EVE and ADAM once paced the Garden of Eden naked and unashamed.
Hence contrary to popular belief the vagina cleavage on my account was ‘Revolutionary’. These ladies parading their priced jewels for the worlds prying eyes was undeniably bold and revering.
For centuries woman have been defined for their womanhood and man has always been aware of the power behind the ‘V’ and with their patriarchal thinking of entitlement it infuriates them that they have to bow and respect Vagina irrespective of how pricey the diamonds encrusted on the ‘I DO’ glitter.
Salemi and Mello’s walk on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival was a political stance on the epidemic suffocating our society. It was a stance on a plaque that is universally infringing the rights of woman and children through sex trafficking, rape, as a bride price indicator and servitude. We have a society of man who feel the need to own my vagina, your vagina, and our vagina for financial gratification. The ‘vagina cleavage’ is thus a poignant piece of activism that screams, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! ALL THIS EFFORT TO DEHUMANIZE US FOR THIS PIECE OF VAGINA, SHOULD COME TO AN END!
It is imperative stance for pedophiles who feel compelled to take advantage of vaginas of every color, shape, form and size. The epidemic is so out of control we see children as young as two years being sexually violated. Case in point, In October 2001 baby Tshepang who was nine months old at the time, was found raped and sodomized by her mother’s boyfriend in Upington.
Rape has gotten out of hand that your safety can’t be guaranteed as even family can’t be trusted. Lesbians are also caught up in these ills permeating our society through corrective rape. What is corrective rape? Vagina this is a vicious act that is meant to teach lesbians how to be real women. These savages believe by raping and abusing you; Vagina, it affirms your ‘womanhood’.
The Vagina is thus a testament of what it is to be a ‘WOMAN’ and it’s this womanhood that we taught to safe guard, keep protected, and our parents are there to provide some form of censorship as we age in maturity. In the Zulu culture for example there’s an annual Reed dance, This annual ceremony is a rite of passage that is centuries old. This cultural occasion sees older Zulu women schooling the virgin girls about how they should act as grown women. Part of this is to promote celibacy until marriage and teach the girls respect for their bodies. Their municipality further introduced an academic bursary for young women who can prove their virginity.
The purity of a Vagina is a profitable jab for the family as the bride price becomes a considerable sum due to the virginity status. The virginity seams in society highlighted here can be traced to the Old Testament, such as;
Levictus 21:13-14, “He shall take a wife in her virginity. A widow, or a divorced woman, or one who is profaned be harlotry, these he may not take; but rather he is to marry a virgin of his own people.”
Deuteronomy 22:13-19, “……then the girl’s father and her mother shall take and bring out the evidence of the girl’s virginity to the elders of the city at the gate.”
Exodus 22: 16-17, “…..He shall pay money equal to the dowry for virgins.
The sacredness of the vagina has been entrenched in our societal layers from the days of Genesis. These sacrosanct layers knotted by the bible, breeding our cultures form the basis of parenting. The elements become every bit engraved in our society from one generation to the other, however It can be said that over the years Vagina, your sacredness has been embraced by parents for self –enrichment as it provides an opportunity for them to be upgraded within the social class structures.
However with the world evolving and society crafting new ways of business, your vagina is considered a lucrative business through sex trafficking of women and girls. This is a worldwide trend that sees women and girls being sold to prostitution and sexual slavery. According to UNICEF about 2 million children are exploited every year in the global commercial sex trade. The basis here is that man has discovered your crowning jewels and as a result they are crafting ways of profiting from our diamonds.
The vagina cleavage sees our cookies being licked, ducked and dipped in a milky charade of chauvinism, what we fail to see is vagina as a victim of society’s miscarriage of justice. What need to value is that before anything else we are woman and this vagina affirms that. Let us not be blinded and misled by the prejudice and bigotry masking the vagina cleavage, and be awaken to the fact that there is a battle on our hands and this fight is deeper than we can imagine. The vagina cleavage is for those lesbians who have been raped and murdered, that wife who was physically abused for denying her husband the vagina, for that child whose innocence was taken away from her for her VAGINA. As a result my fist is pumping the air for Salemi and Mello and most recently for Emily Bloom the 23 year old who walked the streets of New York topless, in support for Free the Nipple, a movement for gender equality.
