It's the race that stops the nation, but the reality is it's become the race that embarrasses the nation! As millions stagger to work today or call in sick on what is becoming one of the least productive days in the Australian work calendar along with the day after Australia day, it's fair to say we Australian's have an embarrassing relationship with alcohol! And ladies.....we are the worst!
There is nothing more cringeworthy than watching the hundreds of pics hit social media and the news the day after cup day which completely undoes the glamour and prestige of the previous morning. And I'm sorry to say but ladies but we are the worst, completely humiliating ourselves!
One can certainly conclude that it appears that most Aussie women completely lack class! It's harsh, yes, but true! What is the point in getting all dolled up if you're going to finish your day acting more like the tramp than the lady??
From pics of chicks spewing in bags, fallen in bushes, legs spread baring far too much to women declaring their love to TV hosts and trying to find the owners of $3 it's the worst of Aussie women on show! Don't get me wrong, it's funny, I laugh, but I can't help but think that in a time when we are looking for respect and equality the cup is the worst display of Aussie chicks on earth!
I think it's fair to say we have lost our dignity, or did we ever have it? Australians seem to have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol and it's getting worse. From one punch attacks to protests over closing times, how we approach and manage alcohol is completely wrong. We see it as a challenge, something that needs to be consumed until we lose our dignity and self control and it's honestly disgraceful!
Watching the fallout of yesterdays event has made me reflect on 6 years of living in Europe where man we ran the gauntlet hard but never to this lack of control! Europeans have a completely different relationship with alcohol, it's to be enjoyed and is everywhere but it's not abused to the same level! Some how here is Australia, the definition of a great night or event was how drunk and out of control you got as apposed to Europe where you just drink to the level of enjoyment not always the desire to get pissed and end up half naked in a pot plant!
So here's the thing, Aussies, particularly my fellow sisters, can we please regain some respect and self dignity. Go out, yes! Have a few drinks, yes!! But please can we leave still walking, talking and holding ourselves together rather than turning in to the bogan bloke altar ego's of ourselves! Nothing says style and class like the start of race day and nothing say cringeworthy and embarrassing like the end!
As America calls us out on our disgraceful drunken behaviour I can't help but say I agree they have a point! We might want to be the fun country but we sure as hell don't want to be the passed out drunk chick nation who is humiliated by a country who could end up with Donald Trump in charge...seriously!
So please next Cup day....stay classy Australia!
