What To Do In December: Great Places To Visit

Nov 22, 2021, 7:55:08 PM Life and Styles

Travel is always a pleasure during the month of December. It's holiday season, family and friends are reunited, and vacation days are left to use. Plus, why wouldn't you want to end the year at some sun-drenched (or snow-dusted) locale, far from quotidian responsibilities and worries? A glamping retreat deep in the wilderness of Montana might be just what you're looking for. Alternatively, maybe it's returning to time-honored destinations such as Cabo or Hawaii to feel at hThere's also the YOLO approach of trying to visit the driest place on earth (Chile's Atacama Desert) or the furthest place on earth (Fiji).of the farthest (Fiji). Here are ideas for your last trip of 2021, whatever your tastes.

Greenough, Montana

A sister property to the 37,000-acre Paws Up Resort, the 12 freestanding homes at Green O are located along the edge of the resort. With nothing but soaring pine trees and sagebrush surrounding you, consider this an extravagant way to get in touch with nature, while enjoying upscale, modern comforts like hot tubs, floor-to-ceiling windows, and access to all of Paws Up's activities. Your favorite part? It's for adults only.

Atacama Desert, Chile

The Atacama Desert, aka the driest place on earth, will reopen November 1 to vaccinated international travelers. Even at night, the stargazing potential at the year-old Nayara Alto Atacama, the Nayara brand's first property outside of Costa Rica, is beyond compare. There is only one property in the San Pedro River valley, with local shepherds and orchards for neighbors. The 42-room property is set away from the village (and its light pollution).

Big Island, Hawaii

It is always beautiful in Hawaii, but winter is especially ideal for East Coasters in need of sun and warmth. With its rustic, untamed feel, incredible marine life, and stunning volcanoes, the Big Island is a truly unique destination. Among the best hotels in the state, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai recently underwent a $100 million renovation, so it's pretty much like staying in a brand new property.

In December, Hawaii is one of the best places to visit in the USA for warm weather. With its tropical breezes, ample sunshine, warm ocean waves, and captivating scenery, this is the ideal place to relax and unwind on island time.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Located in the chic Monterey area (where Big Little Lies was filmed), the Carmel Valley Ranch offers a temperate California climate, wines galore, hiking trails galore, top-notch spa treatments, plus a golf course that rivals any in the world. Both adults and children will find something to enjoy at the sprawling resort. In addition to the aforementioned activities, there are also beekeeping, whisky tastings, archery, ice cream churning, and candle-making. The hotel also offers spacious suites with fireplaces and private decks.

Fiji

On December 1, Fiji will reopen its borders to vaccinated international travelers after closing them earlier last year due to the pandemic. Over 300 pristine islands can be explored in the country, which is only 10 hours from the west coast (about 15 from NYC). A resort on the largest island of the Mamanuca Islands archipelago, Malolo Island, is home to the Six Senses Fiji. The resort has only 24 villas each measuring at least 1,200 square feet and equipped with private pools and outdoor showers, as well as several palatial two- to five-bedroom residences. The Fijian Crested Iguana is an endangered native species with fewer than 5,000 individuals left in the world, as is the case with the Six Senses brand ethos.

New Orleans, Louisiana

The month of December ticks off many boxes in New Orleans. It won't be too humid or hot, with highs in the 60s. Because Mardi Gras is still months away, you'll be able to enjoy New Orleans without dealing with a throng of unruly partygoers. The festive spirit will still be in the air with Christmas just around the corner. Hotel bookings should be made at Maison de la Luz, the jewel box-like property from the team behind the Ace Hotels that opened two years ago in the Warehouse District. This will be the prettiest place to lay your head after a day of gumbo and beignets.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Cabo is always a great place to go, but the abundance of resorts that dot the tip of Mexico's sunny Baja California Peninsula are especially enticing in December. In recent years, the region has experienced rapid development, so there is no shortage of accommodations. There will be a lot going on at the Esperanza, a luxury resort, during this month. An astronomer will guide guests through an evening of storytelling and stargazing on December 21, as part of a celebration of the winter solstice (Cabo's clear skies have made it the perfect place for celestial observations). Then, during the last two weeks of December, a specially curated dinner series will celebrate cooking styles from around the world and pay homage to the four elements: water, fire, earth, and air.

Quebec City, Canada

If you can stand the cold, Quebec City has all the winter wonderland charms of a quaint European village at a fraction of the flight time. Throughout the 400-year-old walled city center (which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site), you'll find pretty snow-dusted cobblestone streets, mulled wine and fondue, plus the grand Notre-Dame Cathedral. You can stay in the family-owned Auberge Saint-Antoine, a 95-room Relais & Châteaux in the Old Port that sits on top of a major archaeological site-thousands of artifacts dating to 1608 are displayed throughout the hotel.

U.S. Virgin Islands

In December, the Virgin Islands are a great choice for a Caribbean vacation in the USA. These islands have tropical natural landscapes, making them ideal for a mid-winter getaway on Saint Thomas, Saint Croix, and Saint John. Visit some of the natural parks on the islands, as well as the beaches and snorkeling. Due to its cruise ship port, St. Thomas is the most populated of the three islands. As a result, there will be many tourists on the sandy beaches in December. St. Croix has the most cultural attractions of all the islands. There is great snorkeling, hiking, tropical plants, and untouched beaches on St. John, the smallest and most natural island.
