Each of these stages combats different contaminants, with the water becoming cleaner with each stage.

What is primary wastewater treatment?


Primary treatment involves temporarily holding wastewater in a sedimentation basin, where heavier solids sink to the bottom and lighter solids float to the surface.

After sedimentation, these materials are retained and the remaining liquid is discharged or sent to a more rigorous secondary phase of wastewater treatment.

These large tanks are also often equipped with mechanical scrapers that continuously convey the collected sludge at the bottom of the tank to a hopper that pumps it to the sludge treatment plant.


What is secondary wastewater treatment?


Secondary wastewater treatment occurs at a deeper level than primary treatment and aims to significantly reduce the biological content of wastewater through aerobic biological processes.

Secondary treatment of wastewater allows for a safer discharge into the local environment by reducing the total amount of biodegradable pollutants to a safe level.

What is tertiary wastewater treatment?



The purpose of tertiary wastewater treatment is to improve water quality to meet domestic and industrial standards or to meet specific requirements for the safe discharge of water. For water treated by municipalities, tertiary treatment includes the removal of pathogens to make the water potable.
