For Katrina Olsen, an industry leading Producer, her role is the ideal combination of critical and creative thinking. With a decorated resume working on countless acclaimed projects for major brands such as WestJet and their award-winning commercial “WestJet Christmas Miracle”, Nimble, the Australian borrowing company, where she worked on a major promotional rebrand, G. H. Mumm & Cie., the iconic champagne company in France, and so many more. Hailing from Australia, she is known all around the world for her talent, and her passion for her craft translates into every project she takes on.

“I have a love of logistics and scheduling, seeing the big picture, how it will all come together and then being the hand that organizes those elements into a final product. As a Producer however I still get to flex my creative muscles from time to time, particularly within my strong creative partnerships with Directors and DPs. So, for me, the attraction of producing is in that balance, and being able to engage in my work from different angles,” she said.

One of Olsen’s most recent success stories has been her work on the Christmas campaign for TMGM (Trademax Global Markets), an Australia-based global forex broker. In late May, it was announced that the commercial was the Silver Winner in Online Commercials – Financial Services/Banking at the Telly Awards, a premier award honoring video and television across all screens. Olsen played a big part in that success.

“Katrina is an amazing producer. Most recently, we collaborated on several advertising commercials for global finance trading platform, TMGM. We were lucky enough to win the prestigious Silver Telly Award for one of them. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Katrina in her capacity as a producer on many different ads over the years and not only is she a pleasure to work with and a total pro, but she’s also a huge asset to every production she works on. She’s incredibly organized, efficient, and has a wealth of experience to draw from. She makes life on every set easier and is fantastic at problem-solving. I’d be happy to work with Katrina on anything and everything,” said Ben Matthews, Director of the TMGM commercials.

After the success of their first commercial, TMGM wanted a holiday-themed advertisement for the series. The commercials follow a hilarious storyline between Tim (a 38 year old male) and Max, his chosen roommate, a giant anthropomorphic globe. Max is extremely good at trading, so for the Christmas spot, he takes over for Santa Claus at delivering presents, and eating the milk and cookies of course. It turns out that Max is not as good at taking over for Santa as he is at trading, leading to hilarious consequences and some destruction of Christmas decorations.

“The Tim and Max commercials are a lot of fun to work on, we have some great comedic scripting as a base and bringing Max to life is such a unique experience,” said Olsen. “Working with a mascot suit like Max is a completely different ball game, as it presents challenges you don’t come across every day, and it is a great feeling being able to work with heads of departments to solve the curve balls and achieve the intended comedic moment.”

The Christmas spot had a number of challenges in making the creative a reality, which is why the company wanted Olsen leading the charge. Staying on schedule was critical, a particular talent of this producer. Having worked on a myriad of different sets over the years across multiple disciplines including commercials, scripted and reality as well as short and long-form formats, has made Olsen particularly well-equipped at problem-solving, which balances the creative in sync with a project’s budget and schedule requirements.

“Everyone on board wanted to capture the comedy we experienced on set working with Max, and it was fantastic to work in such a collaborative, creative environment and to be able to hit those beats in the commercial in spite of the logistical challenges the suit posed,” Olsen recalled.

After the Christmas commercial was such a success, Olsen was brought on once again for an Australian Open Tim & Max spot. It turns out, Max is about as good at tennis as he is at delivering Christmas presents.

“This series of commercials have been such fun to film, and it’s great to know they were enjoyed just as much by the audience,” she concluded.

The 2022 Tellys were very memorable for Olsen. She also produced the commercial “YSL Gift Gold Gift Bold” which was a Bronze Winner in Online Commercials - Beauty, Fashion & Lifestyle.
