How do the different peoples of planet Earth hope to come together in harmony when we are separated by distance, language, and cultural differences? Nicolas Fiery is committed to the concept that these things can easily be set aside. He states, “I often say that Dance is my first language and it is true. Everywhere I’ve traveled, not everyone spoke the languages that I speak (Fiery speaks English, French, Spanish, and Japanese), but through Dance I do not need to be heard. I communicate with the people around me not through words describing my emotions but through emotions directly and it is a language without limitations that everybody can understand and interpret. Dance as well as music is common to the vast majority of cultures.” Dancer, choreographer, ethnochoreologist, and documentarian are all titles which apply to Nicolas as an artist and explorer of the emotionally and artistic intersection of mankind. His MUMOS documentary series World Dance Sessions (WDS) features Fiery travelling the globe and steeping himself in various cultures, utilizing his dance talent to create a bridge with those around him. Far from cultural appropriation, Nicolas synthesizes the energy of the places he visits with his own ideas to create something new for all to share.
