How to Avoid the Freshman 15

How to Avoid the Freshman 15

I am happy to announce that I did not gain any weight this past year! At one point I even lost 3 pounds but then Thanksgiving and Christmas happened. After the holidays, I was back to my original weight and didn't make the extra effort to lose any. Without any further ado, here are the things I did that allowed me to maintain my weight.

I walked almost everywhere. Both semesters I took 15 hours so it was hard for me to find time to exercise. Therefore, I got the most exercise by walking in between classes. It was nice to get some fresh air and it also helps relieve stress.

Eat slower and try to eat smaller portions. It is ridiculously hard to eat healthy in college. We are all poor and vegetables are expensive. So what can you do? Eating slower will allow your stomach time to tell your brain that it is full. This combined with eating smaller portions helps prevent overeating. Thus, helping you maintain your weight.

You can treat yourself, but not all the time. It's finals week and you are up at 3 a.m cramming. All of a sudden you are hungry and want a large stuff crust pizza. Go ahead and order it!

However, you shouldn't do that all the time. Try to treat yourself as little as possible. Only eat three times a day but if you're hungry in between meals then eat a light snack. A light snack does not mean an entire pint of ice cream; it means a granola bar and/or a handful of crackers.

Drink mainly water. Avoid soda like the plague. If you get tired of water then drinking tea is the next best thing.

Eat all food and drinks with high amounts of sugar before 2 p.m. Your metabolism is most active in the morning and starts to slow down around 2 p.m. That means that it is best for you to eat sugary and/or fattening foods around lunch because it is easier for your body to break them down.

There you have it! It's really all about following simple lifestyle choices. - R
