With both players looking to claim wins in order to advance in the tournament, the match between Japan’s tennis superstar and an American rising tennis star is a must-watch.
On January 9, Naomi Osaka is set to play against Sofia Kenin from the United States at the 2019 WTA Brisbane International.
In her first match of the tournament, Naomi Osaka won in three sets as she defeated Maria Sakkari from Greece. It was a close match between them but in the end, Osaka showed her class during the most important points of the match. This allowed her to capitalise on her opponent and come out with the win. She was receiving well as she won 40% of her receiving points which allowed her to break her opponent’s serve on four separate occasions. She is looking forward to defend her Australian Open title. Hence, the Japanese tennis star is hoping to build more momentum as the tournament goes on.
As for Sofia Kenin, she defeated Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets during the opening round of the tournament. It was a comfortable win for her seeing as she had control of the match’s tempo.In her win, Sofia Kenin won 82% of her service games and three return games. 2019 was an excellent year for Sofia Kenin as she managed to establish herself amongst the top players who are participating in the WTA Tour. She is playing with incredible confidence but she must be at her absolute best if she wishes to challenge Naomi Osaka.
Naomi Osaka and Sofia Kenin have played against each other three times in the past. Kenin has won two of those matches while Osaka won the remaining one. The most recent match between these two players was played last season at the Cincinnati Masters where Sofia Kenin won following a retirement from Naomi Osaka.
In her most recent match, Naomi Osaka had a workout of a match at the Brisbane International which is just a mere two weeks away from the Australian Open - a title which she looks forward to defending. Osaka defeated Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3. Winning the match earned her a match with American Sofia Kenin.
As for Sofia Kenin, her only previous encounter with Anastasija Sevastova led her to end the Latvian’s streak of three consecutive Mallorca finals by beating her in last year’s semifinals, going 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, on her way to lifting her second career title.
Looking at the matchup, Kenin Sofia is the most likely to win the match. Given her drive to climb the WTA rankings, she has proven that she is out for blood. As for Naomi Osaka, she is undoubtedly one of the world’s best in women’s tennis. However, her last match showed us that she may not be up to her old championship ways. She narrowly avoided defeat and, with the Australian Open just around the corner, will have to work really hard if she wants to win.
