In his inaugural address, John F. Kennedy made a challenging statement. He suggested this, “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. It’s a wonderful sentiment and one that we could all do well to take to heart.
We should also make it apply in our spiritual life. When most of us pray, we spend most of our time asking God to do something for us. It is good to do this but sometimes we get so caught up in asking and our prayers become a monologue of requests. We need to spend more time asking God what He wants us to do for Him. By fulfilling His requests of us, we will certainly find ourselves better off than when we started. He will even be able to fulfill some of our wants and needs by our obedience to His requests.
James 4:8 tells us, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” (KJV) I can not think of any better way of drawing close to God than asking Him what He wants of me, being quiet and listening to His response and then carrying out His request.
