I was out walking the other night and for the first time in probably 20 years I saw a firefly, one solitary firefly. When I first moved into my house 30 years ago I remember seeing them in the ravine behind the house, but they seemed to have disappeared. As a young boy camping I can remember catching them and putting them in a jar to make a light. They’re amazing to watch. They seem to appear and disappear as their lights go on and off. An amazing creature created by an amazing God and they stand out easily against the darkness of the night.
In John 8:12 Jesus says, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (KJV) He is the light that shines in the darkness that we need to follow. As we follow Him, His light should then shine through us leading others through darkness and into the light. There are many others that claim to be the light. But just as that solitary firefly that I saw, there is only one light, and that light is Jesus. He is the only one we should follow.
