I can remember going to the beach as a teenager with my friends and inevitably someone would end up getting thrown into the water. Some would grab the person’s hands and others would grab the legs. We would carry them to the water’s edge, swing them back and forth and then throw them in. If you grabbed the legs there was a good chance you would get kicked. But if you grabbed the arms, there was a good chance the person would grab you and drag you in with them.
Spiritually, the same thing can happen. We may grab on to someone or something that may not be good for us and then when we try to throw it away, it grabs us and we go down with it. That is why in 1 Thessalonians 5:22 we are told to “abstain from all appearance of evil.” (KJV) The farther away from sin we stay, the safer we will be. If we get close, or even appear to be getting close, we run the risk of it grabbing on to us and dragging us down.
