I read something the other day that I found interesting.  The words silent and listen have the same letters.  It almost seems too strange to be just a quirk of the language.  It’s as though it was planned.

You can only listen if you are silent and if you are silent, the only thing you can do is listen.  The two words are very closely connected.

This listen-silent idea is something that we all need follow more closely.  Too many people feel that by talking, they can show how much they know.  For most of us, by being silent and listening, we can learn much.

In the book of Psalms, God says to us, “Be still, and know that I am God” (46:10, KJV)  By being still, being silent and listening, we can get to know God, who He is and what He wants from us.  Many of our prayers are filled with words.  Maybe we should fill more of our prayer time with silence and listening.

In a school setting, if we want to learn, we need to listen.  The same is true with God.  If we want to learn from Him, we need to take time to listen.  Next time you pray, rather than talk, take some time and just be silent and listen.
