No Other God

No Other God

Exodus 20:3, as part of the ten commandments, says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” (KJV)  This, as with all the other commandments, is still relevant today.  Many would say that we do not worship any other gods, while some would say they worship no god at all.

If you take a narrow view of the word god, that may be true.  But Hebrew often has multiple implications that go along with a definition.  The implication of the word used here for god is that of a ‘strong authority’ or the ‘power or might of one who teaches’.  If we examine our lives I’m sure many of use would acknowledge that there are things of this world that exert a ‘strong authority’ over our lives.  It may be sports, finances, cars or other material possessions.

God is warning us that we should not let anything get between us and Him.  He should be the only authority in our lives.  Once we allow something else to get in our way, it will lead us away from Him and we will start following our feelings that come from another ‘god’.
