Have you ever wondered why Canada is called a Dominion, and not a federation or a republic. The idea of a Dominion was put forth by Samuel Tilley when the British North America Act was being drafted. He got the idea from Psalms 72:8, “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.”
It was in 1921 that the verse was officially used as the motto of Canada when it was included on the new version of the Canadian coat of arms.
When you think about it, the verse makes perfect sense for a Canadian motto. “From sea to sea” easily encompasses the idea of stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. “From the river to the ends of the earth”, shows this Dominion stretching from the St. Lawrence River system to the northernmost Arctic region of the country.
From the very beginning, this great Dominion has had a Godly heritage. Even the official version of our national anthem states, “God keep our land”.
The fourth verse, although not the official version says, “Ruler Supreme, who hearest humble prayer, Hold our Dominion in Thy loving care, Help us to find, O God in Thee, A lasting rich reward, as waiting for that better day, we ever stand on guard.”
