Wise Men

Wise Men

Traditions and Christmas carols tell us there were three wise men that visited the baby Jesus.  In Matthew 2:1 we are told, “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.” (KJV)  Notice it just says wise men.  There is no mention of number.  The idea of three probably comes from verse 11 in the same chapter when it says, “they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.”  Three gifts implies three wise men.  The number is not really important, but the gifts are.

The gifts were very special.  Gold was brought because it was precious, even today it is well over $1000 per ounce.  This would show that they considered Jesus to be royalty.  Both frankincense and myrrh were used in worship, showing they felt the baby Jesus was worthy of worship.

We should still see Jesus in that light.  He is royalty and worthy of our worship.  But let us not limit these sentiments to Christmas and Sundays.  We should honour Him every day of the year and of our lives.
