The Lake District is one of the nation’s favorite destinations for short breaks - couples, singles, and families alike all enjoy trips to the lakes thanks to the range of activities, a wide selection of accommodation in the Lake District, and scenery that gives everyone a bit of relief from city life. If you’re currently looking at planning a trip to the lakes, it’s helpful to have an idea of what activities are available and who can get involved, so we’ve put together a quick guide to the things to do for people of all age categories!

Watersports

Up first we have one of the most exciting things that you can take part in watersports! Thanks to the large natural bodies of water that are found in the district, the lakes are perhaps the UK’s biggest hub for water-based activities; you can expect to be able to get involved in surfing, water-skiing, jet-skiing, and plenty of other aquatic events. Windermere is a popular location for watersports, so if you’re serious about taking part in some of these activities, try to make Windermere your focal point. For those who aren’t too interested in taking part, but enjoy watching watersports, you can aim to time your trip to coincide with some of the competitions that are held around the district over the course of the year.

Hiking

Another popular pastime for the more active traveler is a hiking, which is great for clearing your head and forgetting about the troubles of home life, instead of basking in the natural setting and fresh air of the lakes. Each area in the lakes has its own unique feel and vibe, coupled with gorgeous surroundings which make it such an enticing location - there are trails surrounding each of these towns that are safe and tested, leading to some of the best views in the region.

If you’re a pet lover, why not take your dog along for the ride too? They will love the opportunity to explore the vast open spaces and dog-friendly atmosphere of the Lake District - you can even find pubs, restaurants, and hotels that have dogs-allowed policies!

Distillery Tour

For an adults-only experience in the lakes, there’s nowhere quite like The Lakes Distillery; they’re a small distillery that specializes in fine spirits with a rustic, authentic feel. Get a feel for the holistic whiskey-making process and even sneak a few tasters along the way by taking a tour of the location. These guided events are full of information about the history, process, and ideology that goes into the production of all of your favorite drinks; it’s great fun! If you aren’t much of a whiskey drinker, don’t worry at all: the distillery also has a range of gins and vodkas to quench your thirst and warm your insides.

Should you like one of the drinks you try on the day, simply grab a bottle at the gift shop!

Lake Cruise

When it comes to getting to grips with the lakes, there’s no better way than a boat cruise. These boat trips are a great way to get to know the lakes - there will be a tour guide explaining the history of the district and explaining some of the facts, figures, and trivia regarding the area. You’ll also be able to catch some incredible views that you simply wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere. Cruises are available on a few different lakes, so you’ll be able to get to know the lakes inside and out during your trip.

We hope you’re looking forward to your Lake District trip!
