Spring is here and that means making sure our wardrobe is ready to cope with everything that a busy summer can throw at it. There are key pieces that will see you through everything from picnics on the beach to late night parties with friends.
The Shirt Dress
Deceptively simple, the shirt dress is certainly versatile. For casual and lazy days, the white shirt dress will be the ideal style choice but for the office, opt for a more tailored style in a lightweight style and color. Wear with strappy-at-the-ankle sandals for a great look.
High Neck, Broderie Anglaise Victoriana
A pretty, lightweight fabric, Broderie Anglaise has a floaty romance all of its own. When the sun is beating down and you want something lightweight and floaty, then this is the fabric to choose. As a fabric, its popularity ebbs and flows although it never really goes out of fashion.
If you invest in a style this summer, make it the Parisian clothing style. Lightweight cotton fabrics are ideal for summer, especially in white and pastel shades – think sugary pink and baby blue – but if you want to make a real style statement, opt for the latest twist on broderie Anglaise.
A sweet nod to Victoriana styling, opt for a high-neck, broad patterned Broderie Anglaise dress. Opt for full length with puffed sleeves and again, strappy sandals to complete the informal dreamy effect.
Short Suits For The Office
If your dress code at work is smart, that’s all well and good but when the sun is shining and the mercury creeping up, you can soon start to feel uncomfortable. If you don’t want to shorten your skirt hemline but need to feel a little less ‘wrapped’ in your clothing, then opting for a short suit is perfect for this season (and probably next too!).
Semi-tailored, the short suit is flattering. With a longer line jacket, cinch your waist with a broad belt. Opt for loose-fitting but tailored shorts that reach to just above the knee. Wear with pretty flats and a plain, short sleeve topped underneath for when you want to shed an outer layer. Great for hot summer days but cooler days when autumn comes too.
There is another patterned fabric that is promising to be popular this coming season and that is checks. Easy to wear versatile to style, a checked fabric item of clothing in your wardrobe this season is a must.
Not every summer’s day is hot and so when the daytime temperature cools, a light layer in the shape of a pretty jacket is a must. And with a checked jacket, you are at the cutting edge of the latest fashions.
Keep your eyes peeled for checked, zipped jackets – the beige background with black checks is proving popular – with a soft shape. There are also some great jackets with small and larger check patterns coming to stores and so by summer, you’ll have a widening range to choose from.
A Denim Dress
For smart-casual wear, there will be nothing better this summer than a denim dress, especially one styled on the coat dress.
Opt for a fabric belt and team it with chunky trainers for a super casual look. For a more formal styling, such as a lunch with the girls look, opt for slimline flats and an across the shoulder bag.
The Must-Have Accessory – Over The Shoulder Bag
The over-the-shoulder bag is not necessarily new but takes a look at the catwalk and you’ll see the latest thinking when it comes to this versatile accessory. As well as leather, boxed bags complete with monochrome check patterning the other must-have over the shoulder bag is a clear, plastic bag.
