Do you want to get away from it all? I mean really get away from it all? The U.K’s Daily Star recently published a list of the 20-best kept travel secrets in the world. Some you will no doubt be familiar with. But others might be completely new to you.

The Gili Islands

One of travel website redtag.ca’s most popular destinations is Bali in Indonesia. But are you aware of the island of Gili Meno, which is also in Indonesia? The remote Gili Islands allow no cars or motorcycles. Gili Meno is the smallest of the three Gili Islands and considered to be the most peaceful and under-developed. It’s possible to walk around the island along the beach or in the paths on Gili Meno in under two hours.

According to the Gili Islands website, most visitors are attracted to Gili Meno for the lure of total escapism.  It’s  therefore very popular with honeymooning couples and “adventurous castaway types.” Maybe this is where Gilligan & the Skipper ended up?

Along with destination reviews, redtag.ca offers a number of package deals to Indonesia, as well as flights from Comox, British Columbia to Bali, Indonesia. However, getting to Gili Meno may be somewhat difficult. Boats from the Lombok mainland leave from Bangsal at irregular intervals when the outriggers are full (with a maximum carriage of twenty people). redtag.ca offers a resort on the island of Gili Trawangan. The Vila Ombak Hotel is a 4-star resort, reviewed highly by redtag.ca users, and featuring access to the Trawangan markets and harbour.

Another option if you’re heading to the far east is the El Nido Pangulasian Island in the Philippines. The island contains numerous resorts, cottages, and small inns. Pangulasian Island is El Nido Resorts’ Eco-Luxury island resort in Bacuit Bay, El Nido. The resort fronts a pristine beach against a backdrop of tropical forest. Also known as the “Island of the Sun,” Pangulasian has breathtaking views of both sunrise and sunset. The resort offers a total of 42 deluxe accommodations built with contemporary Filipino and cutting edge “green” design.

In addition to travel reviews, redtag.ca offers a selection of deals to the Philippines, as well as direct flights from Montreal to Manila.

For those in North America looking for a shorter plane trip, redtag.ca suggests the Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve in Costa Rica. Tirimbina’s abundant forest provides great ecotourism activities, such as trails and suspension bridges.  Rooms cost under $120 a day for two people in newly remodeled air conditioned rooms overlooking the gardens and including entrance to the reserve and trails, breakfast and either lunch or dinner (have a couple of power bars on the trail and opt for dinner). It’s billed as the cheapest “All Inclusive” in Costa Rica.

Of course, we’ve only scratched the surface on the best kept travel secrets in the world. There are many more. Start cruising the Internet and then check travel availability. You’ll be sure to finds something that strikes your fancy.
