Homes often become unusually cluttered, leaving the residents overwhelmed with organizational tasks. There are many ways that people choose to handle this. They may stuff the closets full, leave rooms unusable, or fill up the garage. Even in mild cases, families can become overly stressed with an uncomfortable living situation. When this happens, it may take a while to sort through items and find a place for them. A storage unit can be used as a short-term or long-term solution.

Sort it Out

It may seem overwhelming to sort out the items in your home. This can help you, however, determine what needs to stay and what can go. You may find that many items go directly to the garage sale or donate pile. Many people are surprised to find that they can fill several boxes with these items. This small step can feel incredibly liberating. The items you are going to take to storage should be things that you would like to incorporate back into your home or sell. Large items can be sent to storage until they are sold.

Determine Value

Self-storage units usually come with a monthly charge. You need to decide how long you may need the space for and decide if your items are valuable enough to pay these fees. The value of your items should exceed the amount of money you are expected to spend for the space. Sentimental value is also something that many people take into consideration. An antique item from relatives or something meaningful from a parent may be worth saving, even at a price.

Choose a Space

Usselfstorage come in a variety of sizes and climates. You can choose an indoor air conditioned unit, or one in an outdoor area. Many items do fine in an outdoor unit. It is similar to storing items in your garage. This is, however, not the place for things like photographs and expensive artwork. Size is also a consideration. It is a good idea to consider the amount of items you plan to bring to the unit. You an often stack items high to the ceiling in a smaller unit.

Wherever the items are headed, be sure to label them properly. When a major house cleaning is underway, it can be easy to accidentally send a box with your favorite items to the donate pile. Color coding often works well for this situation. Use a different colored marker to label the boxes for each destination. Boxes should be taped up so nothing falls out, as well.  You may realize that it is much easier to make decisions on where things go when you are packing them down into smaller portion sizes.

A cluttered home can make it difficult to enjoy your space. Organization can seem impossible when the closets and bedrooms are stuffed full of items. The simple act of sorting items and putting them in labeled boxes can lift a lot of the stress. Take some time to see what has enough value to warrant paying for storage, as well. When you choose a space and clear the home, you may feel a huge relief.
