Wearing a mask when going outdoor is essential to stay safe from the virus. But for the mask to be effective in protecting you and others, you must wear it properly. Keep reading below to find out how to wear a face mask properly.

The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has affected the entire world, causing over 1.17 million deaths globally. Each of us is responsible for stopping the virus from causing more deaths and victims by respecting social distancing and lockdown restrictions and wearing a face mask to prevent taking or giving the virus to others.

Masks are an essential step to help prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading. Yet, for them to be effective, people need to wear them the right way. Here are five tips for properly wearing a face mask to protect yourself and others from the virus.

Wash your hands before touching the mask

Before putting on your face mask, you need to wash your hands to make sure that you eliminate all viruses and bacteria that might have gotten on your hands. Since the mask will cover your mouth and nose, it is essential for it to be sterile and clean.

Medical experts believe that washing our hands is the most effective way to protect ourselves from the virus. You need to wash your hand with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to make sure that you eliminate all bacteria and the SARS-CoV-2 virus in case you have touched something infected with it.

Cover your nose and mouth

Wearing the mask under your chin leaves your mouth and nose exposed. Therefore, the mask won’t protect you from getting the virus, nor will it protect others from getting the virus from you in case you are infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Only touch the bands or ties

When you remove or put your mask on, only touch the bands or ties. Even if you have washed your hands before using the mask, it’s best to avoid touching the mask just in case your hands aren’t completely clean. So, only touch the bands or ties of your mask. What’s more, never touch your mask, or others’ mask, when wearing it.

Wear a mask that fits perfectly

Your face mask needs to fit perfectly in order to be efficient. It must cover your nose, mouth, and chin so that you are protected from the virus. If the average size of masks doesn’t fit your face perfectly, you can use a cotton mask with string ties, which can be adjusted for added protection and comfort.

Wash reusable masks

If you are wearing reusable masks, such as cotton masks, make sure you wash them after every use, especially if you have been in public spaces and interacted with other people. If you are using single use masks, make sure you throw them away after you used them only one time. Never reuse a single use mask twice or more because it can be infected with bacteria and viruses and make you sick.
