Summer Is More About A “Beach Bod”: Health and Safety Tips

Look at any beauty or fitness magazine, and there’s undoubtedly an article about how to make your body more “beach ready.” While many people want to make sure that they feel confident about themselves when they head to the beach, there are other health and safety tips that are more important to think about this summer.

Stay Hydrated

When you’re outside enjoying the sand and sun, it can be easy to forget to drink enough water. Dehydration can happen any time of the year, but it can be especially dangerous during the summer season when the sun is hot, and the temps are high. In this type of setting, hydration is key.

While there are different recommendations to how much water you should drink every day, trying to drink eight 8-ounce glasses is a great starting point.

Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illnesses

Even if you drink enough water, you’re still at risk of getting heat stroke or another heat-related illness. If left untreated or misdiagnosed, heat-related illness can be fatal. Familiarizing yourself with the signs of heat stroke can help keep you and your family and friends healthy, safe, and having fun this summer.

Walking and Biking

If you’re lucky, you live in a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly community. In the summer, walking and biking is not only a great way to get exercise, but it’s also a fun way to get around when the summer temps are perfect.

If you’re planning on walking or biking after dark, always make sure you wear some type of reflective gear, so that you’re more visible to motorists. Always wear a helmet when riding your bike and be kind to your feet by wearing good walking shoes (you can always put your flip-flops in your bag).

When you’re riding on the road, stay in the bike lane (if one is available) and share the road; know the rules of the road. As a pedestrian, always utilize crosswalks and pay attention to motorists; even if you have the right of way, they might not be looking for you.

Get to Your Destination Safely

Whether you’re driving to the beach, to your best friend’s backyard BBQ, or on a weekend road trip, it’s essential to get to your destination safely. Summer time is a busy time of year for travelers and road construction, which makes the roads more congested.

Do your best to eliminate any of your distractions while driving. So, even if it means you turn your smartphone off and keep your music at a reasonable volume, you’re making a commitment to staying focused while driving; don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of time to blast your tunes and take selfies at the beach.

Planning on drinking at the party? Either plan an overnight visit or have a backup plan. Never get behind the wheel of your car after drinking. Summer is a busy time for patrolling for drunk drivers, but you are at risk of a heavy fine or an accident all year round.

Slather on The Sunscreen

Want to be beautiful and healthy? Consider the importance of your skin condition. Don’t skip the sunscreen. Whether you’re hanging out in the shade or laying in the sand, your skin needs to have some essential skin protection. Not only will you prevent the signs of early aging, but you can lower your risk of skin cancer.
