Runespeaker was a beautifully conceptualized fantasy story with complex world building, characters with rich histories and a detailed and lush culture and folklore. However, the length of the story worked against it; I kept wanting to know more, more of the folklore, more of the culture, more of the character's histories, and more of the world building, but there wasn't enough time. I wanted to delve deeper into the world of Zxe-Kotyare that Ysaan had found herself locked up in. She was such a strong, independent character in a desperate situation, and her story was amazing. Mila Sankale is an impressive writer because I was hooked quickly and when the story was over, the only thought in my head was I need to find more about Ysaan’s story now. As a prequel, Runespeaker did its job well, I am looking forward to book 1 in January.
