In my young age and spiritual maturity, I assumed that God was threatened with my questions. I can't recall why I believed that, but it was an under lining fear in my conversations with God. If I ask questions I might loose faith and by God be rejected. The truth is quite opposite. Questions actual reveal our hearts and God is a master at asking provoking questions.
Consider the book of Haggai. The minor prophet utters some strong questions in the name of the Lord.
Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways. Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the Lord. You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the Lord of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.” Haggai 1:7-9 ESV
The Lord engages the people by asking them to take a look at their lifestyle, then drops the big one and says, "Why?"
Within the context we can see this was a thought provoking question. God wasn't looking for an answer, actually He knew the answer. The people weren't satisfied because the presence of God wasn't the center of their existence.
All throughout Scripture God engages people in dialogue.
Honest dialogue requires vulnerable questions.
Jesus used questions throughout his ministry when he was teaching and training his followers.
Once Jesus asked, "Who do you say that I am?"
Was Jesus doubting his identity? Was Jesus looking for affirmation of who he truly was? Absolutely not! He was seeking the heart of his disciples. Jesus asked provoking questions to bring to the surface the revelation birthed in their heart.
Our questions do not threaten God.
Our doubt does not threaten God.
In fact, we need to realize through out the narrative of scripture, God is the one asking majority of the questions.
God desires to engage your heart. He wants to touch the darkest doubt and answer the deepest longing of your heart.
So ask away! Who is God? Where is God? Why God? All these questions are valid in the presence of God.
