“Everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid for the Lord Almighty has spoken.” Micah 4:4
“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24
I have a lot of favorite things and favorite people. My favorite singer is Garth Brooks (followed oh so closely by Michael W Smith), my favorite dessert is a three way tie between Flan, Sopapillas, and Chocolate Meringue Pie. I have a favorite journalist- Willie Geist, my favorite restaurant in Dallas where I live is Y.O Ranch Steakhouse, and my favorite dish there is a three way tie between the Chicken Fajita Salad, the Tequila Sunrise Chicken, and the Petite Filet. But of all the favorites that I have, there is one that has really captured my heart of late. Every time I cross the street to get picked up by the fixed route bus, I park myself under my favorite tree.
Yup, that’s right, I have a favorite tree.
I love this tree because when I go under it, I am completely surrounded by shade. As much as I love the heat, it was really nice to be able to go under the tree and be somewhat provided with relief by way of the shade. But as odd as it sounds, no matter what the temperature is, I have this beautiful sense of safety when I park under the tree. It’s almost as if I have this strange belief that if I am under the tree nothing and no one can do any harm to me.
It’s funny how something so simple can make you feel so safe.
In 7 days’ time, we are going to elect a new President of the United States. Whether you like one of them or none of them, one of them is going to become our President in January. I have to admit to you that this election has frightened me unlike any other election that I have lived through. You have to admit that our two candidates are not the most ideal people when it comes to honesty and integrity, which I firmly believe are two very important components in finding a leader for our great country.
No matter what happens, things will change, some of the changes may be for the good, and some may be for the bad….depending on who ultimately gets elected. I think that no matter what happens, this is a very scary time for our country and there has been no more urgency to beg God to return to the forefront of our country that was founded on Christian values, than right now. I wish that I could go under that tree on Election night with that feeling of no matter what, nothing and no one can do harm to me.
As usual, my ideas are completely unrealistic.
I did not plan or even think to use both of these verses in this blog. But I am thankful that the Holy Spirit moved me to keep digging, because there was more to it than what I had in mind. God sometimes finds a way to give you more than what you had in mind.
I am almost embarrassed to admit this to you, but in good ole’ Shelley Olsen fashion, I’m going to tell it to you anyway……Here goes: I was listening to the Hamilton album again……Yes, again. I won’t go into the details and bore you to death, but one of the songs quoted Micah 4:4. When I first heard the song, it wasn’t that I didn’t understand how the verse made sense in the song (it’s really awesome) but I was trying to figure out what the verse meant now. As I researched commentaries and called friends that are way smarter than me to try and figure it out, I ultimately came to the conclusion that this particular verse pointed to Heaven.
There is a place waiting for us (“Us” meaning if you are in Christ and have a personal relationship with Him) called Heaven. No nasty presidential elections- Christ will rule as King, which He does anyway, but oh how much we don’t remember that. We are so focused on the earthly that we forget the eternal. Maybe that’s why we are in the mess and the state that we are in. There will be no sickness or pain or crime or anything else that has plagued our world since the day an apple was eaten. It will be a place of total perfection and safety.
Why will this place be so wonderful and safe? Because the Lord Almighty has spoken, and when God speaks, things happen.
If that doesn’t give you chills, I don’t know what will.
It was also by way of Jesus hanging on a cross, made by a tree, that we are also given the gift of ETERNAL ONCE AND FOR ALL salvation. 1st Peter tells us that Jesus bore EVERY SINGLE sin of EVERY SINGLE person in the world……..on a tree.
Safety will be given to us under a tree in heaven; Salvation was given to us through the Cross of Christ at Calvary. Have you accepted the gift of eternal life?
This week, I challenge you to find a tree and sit under it. Bring your Bible, spend some time in His Word and remember the safety and salvation of Jesus Christ that is over you now, and that will be over you in Heaven.
I see you November 8th……….Bring it on, because no matter what, I’m safe.
Christians, you’re safe too. To those of you who have not received Christ as Savior, there is plenty of room, safety and salvation for everyone.
Don’t forget that He loves you and so do I,
