High Earnings

If high earning potential is a driving force in your career choice, then driving an HGV could be a good option. Whilst there are outgoings such as HGV insurance to consider in some cases, earnings for HGV drivers are generally on the up. This is due to a number of different factors, such as a driver shortage. The Freight Transport Association believed that there is a 52,000 HGV driver shortage in the UK alone.

Drivers can expect to earn from £15 to £35 an hour with bonuses, meaning that you could easily earn £100 a shift. Annual salaries can start at £25,000 to £30,000 and go up to as much as £50,000 a year. This demonstrates the financial opportunities on offer without the need to accrue thousands of pounds worth of debt just to train for the job you want to do.

Job Security and Regular Work

There should be no shortage of work, even if you have only just qualified as an HGV driver. The career and job opportunities are not normally adversely affected by economic changes, as people will always need shops filled with food or furniture, for example, and there is a proven shortage of drivers at the moment, meaning that there are plenty of varied vacancies to fill.

Independence and Freedom

Driving on the open road can leave you feeling free in both body and mind, and travel is well known to have positive effects on everything from stress levels to maintaining a good work-life balance. It is no wonder, then, that this is a job that never goes out of fashion.
