The Importance of Accessibility for Your Business Website

The more people who visit your company’s website the better. In an ideal world, you will get visitors of all ages, nationalities, and walks of life. Yet, this diversity also raises the vital issue of website accessibility.

How can you ensure that every single person who uses your site can access it easily and fully enjoy it? There are a few key elements that it is important to bear in mind when designing a site.

Alt Text  to Describe Images

Alt text is used to describe an image that people might not see. There are a few reasons why this might be needed. For instance, if the image doesn’t load properly or it the user is visually impaired and needs a screen reader when browsing.

Such is the importance of alt text that Amazon affiliates are advised to always add it. There was even a case a few years ago when the National Federation of the Blind threatened to take Target to court for the lack of alt text on their site.

Optimization for Billions of Mobile Users

A brief look at the figures for mobile browsing are enough to show us that this is a segment of the market not to be ignored. In 2016, web analytics firm StatCounter pointed out that mobile browsing had overtaken desktop browsing for the very first time. Since then, mobile internet numbers have carried on growing.

A site that isn’t optimized for mobile use may be awkward to see on the smaller screen or it may take too long to load. If your site isn’t designed with mobile users in mind, then you risk losing out badly. After all, more than five million people now own a mobile device according to figures from GSMA Intelligence.

A Variety of Payment Methods

Not everyone wants to buy online in the same way. This includes differences in the way that they prefer to make their payment. Indeed, the range of different payment methods around these days makes this an issue to be taken into account by any business.

We can get a good feel for the range of payment options available by looking at popular retail sites such as eBay, Groupon, and Walmart. If we look at the example of Buzz Bingo, we can see that it is possible to pay with Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, PayPal, or Paysafecard.

The Right Color Scheme

A good color scheme on a website does more than just increase its attractiveness. Up to eight per cent of men with North European genes are colorblind and may struggle to understand a screen that has the wrong color scheme for their needs. Even big text can be difficult or impossible to make out.

Equally, someone who has impaired vision needs a clear site with good color contrasts. The Apple site is a good example of a case where the information is bright and easy to read but doesn’t lose its brand feel due to this.

Making a website more accessible isn’t particularly difficult to do. However, if you don’t do this, then it could have a big knock-on effect for the amount of business that you do online.
