Today I am going to share some basic information about PCOS which stands for 'Polycystic ovarian syndrome/Polycystic ovarian disease. As I have mentioned in my previous post, I feel passionately about creating awareness for PCOS for two most important reasons:
A) PCOS is a fairly common disorder among young female (1in every 10) affecting them during the most productive years of their lives which when aware, can be easily prevented. (I wish I had known more about it from before I was diagnosed myself).
B) The complications associated with PCOS are completely preventable hence saving you from a lifetime of disability like diabetes, heart disease and other endocrine abnormality (infertility aspect of it being the least risky of all).
What is PCOS?
PCOS is a complex endocrine disorder affecting females more commonly in their reproductive years. It was first described by Stein & Leventhal in the year 1935. There are various causes that have been implicated in PCOS like obesity, unhealthy lifestyle, stress etc even though the exact cause is not known. Newer studies have shown association with genetic factors as well. Basically there is a disturbance of normal ovulation causing inovulatory cycles (which means your ovaries do not release or produce egg/ovum like they normally should) hence leading to hormonal imbalance overall.
What are the symptoms of PCOS?
PCOS presents with variety of symptoms ranging from menstrual disturbances to depression but more commonly patients present with menstrual irregularities ( absence of period, excessive bleeding during periods etc), acne, weight gain, excessive hair fall & mood disturbances.
How do you treat PCOS?
PCOS is not treatable even though early detection & lifestyle changes can reverse all of your symptoms and with better awareness & healthy lifestyle changes it is manageable. Also it's complications are completely preventable.
Does PCOS causes infertility?
Studies have shown there is about 40% chance that PCOS patients may have trouble conceiving as compared to those who do not have PCOS but with the kind of treatment options available now a days there is always an increased & better chance of achieving fertility.
Who should I consult if I have any of the symptoms of PCOS?
Either a Gynecologist or an Endocrinologist.
What is the most effective solution to combat PCOS?
The most effective & in fact the first line treatment for PCOS is lifestyle changes! Routine exercise/any form of physical activity, correct dietary changes and Yoga are some of the most proven methods to reverse symptoms of PCOS.
