From the melodic keys of the piano at the beginning of the song, I was hooked.
I was sitting with a friend of mine, who is a radio DJ, when I first heard "Perfect Ruin".We were chatting away when I suddenly stopped, in the middle of the conversation, to ask whose song it was playing on the speakers. I couldn't help but listen to that raw, strong voice. I was mesmerized.
Who was this Kwabs guy? Why have I not heard about him till now?
I am a HUGE fan of soul music. I love listening to the soft strings of guitars, the emotion, the raw feeling in the music. I believe that Kwabs' voice is one of the best that I have heard. It captures, it evokes feeling and it is pleasing to the ears. I immediately felt something when I heard the song. It tugged at my heartstrings. I fell in love.
I went on to listen to some of the other songs on his EPs, Pray For Love, Love & War and Walk. Yet nothing compared to Perfect Ruin. Though his covers of "Like A Star" by Corinne Bailey Rae and "The Wilhelm Scream" by James Blake came close. Personally I think that he should stick to being a soul artist. Even Jazz would be perfect for his kind of voice.
But that is just my opinion.
