“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30
A yoke is a heavy wooden harness that fits over the shoulders of an ox or oxen. It is attached to a piece of equipment the oxen are to pull. A person may be carrying heavy burdens of (1) sin, (2) excessive demands of religious leaders (23:4; Acts 15:10), (3) oppression and persecution, or (4) weariness in the search for God. Jesus frees people from all these burdens. The rest that Jesus promises is love, healing, and peace with God, not the end of all labor. A relationship with God changes meaningless, wearisome toil into spiritual productivity and purpose.
In what sense was Jesus’ yoke easy? The yoke emphasizes the challenges, work, and difficulties of partnering with Christ in life. Responsibilities weigh us down, even the effort of staying true to God. But Jesus’ yoke remains easy compared to the crushing alternative. Jesus doesn’t offer a life of luxurious ease—the yoke is still an oxen’s tool for working hard. But it’s a shared yoke, with weight falling on bigger shoulders than yours. Someone with more pulling power is up front helping. Suddenly you are participating in life’s responsibilities with a great Partner—and now that frown can turn into a smile, and that gripe into a song. (Tyndale Study Bible)
Have you gone to bed weary? Have you stressed about what you have done or what you have not done? Have you been stressed about your financial situation?
Jesus invites you to come to Him. He invites you to a solution.
A couple of things the Bible depicts come to mind. The birds and the bees never go without food. God cares for them, why won't He care for you and I? The Bible clearly states we have to work. Proverbs 12:24 ESV - The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor..Proverbs 16:3 ESV - Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. The b
Birds can't just stay in their nest and wait for the food to arrive, they have to scurry and find food.
So just like God will care for your physical needs he cares for your weariness. The important thing is you have to do something. You have to take a step towards Jesus. Then spend time in the Bible, all the principles and lessons are there.
As the daily challenges of life cross our path, we seek advise from our peers or friends. What I have learnt in the last while is all the solution to life’s challenges are in the Bible.
Read the scripture and commentary again. Note how powerful the teaching is.
“Lord I pray that your word will touch all the people in the world. There is a way to peace. In Jesus name. Amen”
