Hip pain can be experienced by anyone. It gives a mild to a sheer type of pain to a person. Often what happens is when there is hip pain there is tightness felt over the joint and muscles. This causes stiffness in the muscles. These stiff muscles tend to cause pain in movement. In later stages, these stiffened muscles cause the impingement of nerves which severe the pain. But all of that can be treated with physical therapy.

Signs and symptoms

  • Throbbing pain
  • Restricted movement
  • Stiffness in the muscles
  • Reduction in weight-bearing over the joint.
  • Buttock pain
  • Pain while walking, and any movement.
  • Disability

The hip joint is a ball and socket joint that is associated and well balanced through various ligaments and muscles. The ball and socket joint helps the thigh to move in different directions. It also consists of a fluid-filled capsule that lubricates the joint for efficient movement.

What can be the various cruises for hip pain?

  • Trauma- the most basic cause can be trauma in case the person had undergone an accident or fall which causes bone injury, serious blow of a ball or any hard object can also turn out to be causative. The severity may be based on the shortcoming which might have happened with the patient.

  • Osteoarthritis - In this condition, there is degeneration of the cartilage seen which fails to provide the cushioning effect to the hip joint. There can be enough wear of the cartilage in this condition. There can be pain and inflammation of the affected bone.

  • Irritable hip syndrome - Most commonly seen in children with upper respiratory tract infections. It is usually self-correcting. The patients experience severe pain.

  • Referred pain - This can be experienced due to the cause of pain in relation to some other area.

What does a physical therapist do?

  • The physical therapist initially carries out various examinations such as X-rays, ultrasound, and MRI scans.
  • This imaging test helps the physical therapist to rule out all the other possibilities and carry out the diagnosis.

  • The biopsy is also usually carried out to check in to any abnormalities.

  • The physical therapist also checks for the movements, check the degree of motion rotation and check out for any trigger points of pain as well as the muscle stiffness palpation is being carried out.

  • Modalities - The physical therapist carries out various modalities like hip flexion, hip, rotation, hip extensions, lifting, abduction exercises which help the patient to relieve the muscle and improvise the motility in the lower half.
  • Stretching - Is the most helpful. The flexibility and strength are gained through it. It also causes an increase in blood flow to the joint which plays an important role in the early recovery of the patient.
  • Thermo modality - Cold and heat compress can be provided to the patient which brings about vasodilatation thus easing out pain and bringing relief to the patient. The heat or cold modality differs from case to case and clinical observation.
  • Weight-bearing-  It is done by an experienced and medically trained physical therapist who keeps various weights from low to high over the hip which puts pressure on the hips thus recovering it back to normal.
  • Manual therapy- These include thrust, non-thrust, and mobilization of the soft tissue. These are found to be effective.
  • Gait and balance training- The inability to walk due to its effect on this changes the gait of the person, thus the patient is trained well through using devices such as crutches, canes, walkers, etc thus restoring the balance and stability.

What happens when delayed for physical therapy?

In case the patient is too late for physical therapy, there can be no help provided to the patient through this non-narcotic process. The patient has to undergo surgery, such as hip replacements and others depending upon the case. Thus time plays a very important role for the same one should be aware of and bring it to the notice of the physical therapist as soon as possible.

The physical therapist helps the patient to increase the mobility of the joint, reduces their pain, increases the strength of the muscle, and increases the range of motion of the joint. The physical therapist is expertise in resolving all the joint and muscle-related pain problems.

Conclusion

In this new and upscaling world, the medical facilities have been advanced and the cause or the concern is being reduced. One should effectively communicate the complaints to the physical therapist and get rid of all the health concerns. The physical therapist helps restore balance, stability, and strength in the patient. They help to achieve the restoration of the patient to life.
