Spirit, Soul, and Body

1 Thessalonians 5:23 states: “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The spirit and the soul are the spiritual parts of us and the body is the physical part of us. The spiritual parts of us are eternal but the physical part of us is not eternal. To better understand the spirit, soul, and body, consider the following points.

When a baby is conceived by its parents, only the physical part, the body, is produced. This is the only part that will someday die. The spirit and soul is created by God and comes from the spiritual realm. Of the physical and spiritual parts of the person, the spiritual part came into existence first. All of the souls were created in the beginning with creation and came from God.

The soul is a part of what God is. Consider a drop of water from an ocean. The drop of water contains all of the elements of the ocean it came from. Or consider a spark from a flame of fire. It also contains all of the elements of the flame. Consider the next two verses:

John 10:34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, I said, “You are gods”’?

Psalm 82:6 I said, “You are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High.”

Many think that the soul and spirit are the same thing. But Hebrews 4:12, indicates that there can be a division between them by God.

Our souls are connected to God, but sent a portion of itself as a spirit to live a physical life, to gain knowledge, and to experience life in the flesh for its growth. This is the purpose of life here. As the soul is connected to God, so is the spirit connected to its soul. The soul is our higher self in the spiritual realm and we have access to it, thus having access to God.

Our true identity is in the soul and not in the body. We are here for the growth of our soul. But why did God create the soul? Through the soul, God is able to have experiences with its knowledge. At death, the body turns to dust and the spirit returns to its soul and the soul grows and provides the experience to God. Hopefully we can see that we do fit into God’s plan.
